For generations, Sri Lanka’s zoological gardens have been places of wonder. Families have visited to
experience animals they had only seen in books, students have learned about biodiversity and
conservation, and tourists have discovered another unique aspect of the island’s rich natural heritage.
However, the role of modern zoological institutions extends far beyond recreation.
Today, Sri Lanka’s zoological network encompasses a diverse range of facilities and initiatives, including
the National Zoological Gardens, elephant conservation and care programs, open-range safari
experiences such as Ridiyagama Safari Park, animal welfare initiatives, veterinary care, breeding
programs, environmental education, and conservation research. These institutions play a vital role in
preserving species, educating future generations, and ensuring the wellbeing of animals under their
care.
Despite the significance of this work, much of it remained unseen by the wider world.
Many visitors were familiar with the zoo itself, but fewer understood the extensive efforts that take
place behind the scenes. The dedicated teams responsible for animal care, the veterinary professionals
monitoring animal health, the enrichment programs designed to encourage natural behaviours, and
the conservation initiatives aimed at protecting species all contribute to a much larger mission.
Recognizing the need to tell this story more effectively, we embarked on the development of a modern,
international-standard website that would serve as the digital gateway to Sri Lanka’s zoological
institutions.
The objective was simple yet impactful: to create a platform that reflects the scale, professionalism, and
importance of the work being carried out while making information accessible to audiences both locally
and internationally.
Through the new website, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the diverse experiences offered
across the zoological network. They can explore the National Zoological Gardens, learn about the care
and protection provided at the Elephant Orphanage, and discover the unique concept behind
